Steam safety relief valve

How Dose steam safety relief valve Working?

Pressure in steam systems and related equipment is controlled by pressure reducing valve (PRV) stations and control elements that monitor pressure, return condensate from steam lines to boilers at the NIH Central Utility Plant, and separate steam and condensate at different pressures. Pressure in steam lines For many pressure vessels, pressure can rise above the rated design pressure for reasons including control instrument failure and pressure surges

Actual application scenario
The basic components of a spring-loaded"conventional"SRV consist of a vertical steam inlet, a horizontal discharge, and an internal disc that is held closed by a spring within the bonnet. Steam is discharged through the valve disc when it is lifted from its seat by steam and enters the valve port above the setsteam pressure, which the system operating pressure is selected by the designer by adjusting the spring. Set pressuresare greater than the normal operating pressure of the system to avoid unnecessary discharges, but they should never exceed the system's maximum allowable operating pressure. The valve releases steam through an outlet pipe that is flanged or threaded to the discharge port. The outlet pipe is bent at an elbow, from which the steam escapes to a vent
Steam Safety Relief Valve vs Pressure Relief Valve
AspectSteam Safety Relief ValvePressure Relief Valve (PRV)
Fluid TypeCompressible fluids: steam, gas, vaporCompressible or incompressible fluids, depending on its subclass
Opening BehaviorPop action: rapid full lift at set pressure, nearly full dischargeDepends on subclass: safety valve = pop action; relief valve = proportional (gradual) opening as pressure rises
Primary FunctionEmergency discharge to prevent boiler/vessel rupture from overpressure — the"last line of defense"Prevent system pressure from exceeding set value, e.g. liquid thermal expansion or blocked pumps
Reseating / BlowdownOften has adjustable blowdown rings; reseats with a significant pressure drop (blowdown ~4–10%)Relief valve usually lacks blowdown rings; reseats smoothly as pressure drops
Typical ApplicationsSteam boilers (ASME Sec I), gas pressure vessels, air receivers, steam pipingHydraulic systems, liquid storage tanks, pump protection, process systems, liquid vessels (Sec VIII)
Applicable StandardsASME Section I (boilers), Section VIII (gas vessels), API 520/521ASME Section VIII, API 520 (liquid service), covering all subclasses
Throttling / AdjustabilityNot for throttling; strictly a safety protection deviceSafety device; relief valve allows proportional discharge (not continuous pressure regulation)
