What is a Floating Ball Valve?

A floating ball valve is a type of ball valve where the ball core is not fixed by a shaft at both ends. It floats between two valve seats and moves slightly under medium pressure to press against the downstream seat, helping to form a tight seal.

How does a floating ball valve work?

When the handle or actuator rotates the stem, the ball core turns 90 degrees. When the through hole of the ball aligns with the pipeline, the valve opens. When the hole is perpendicular to the pipeline, the valve closes. The floating ball design helps the seat seal more tightly under fluid pressure.
