What are ball valves and how do they work?

A ball valve is a quarter-turn valve that controls fluid flow using a hollow, spherical ball. The valve is open when the hole in the ball is aligned with the flow path, allowing the substance to pass through. To close the valve, the handle is rotated 90 degrees, which turns the ball so the hole is perpendicular to the flow path, completely blocking it. The valve's design allows for quick, easy operation and a clear visual indication of its status, with the handle parallel to the pipe for open and perpendicular for closed.

What are gate valves and how do they work?

A gate valve controls fluid flow by raising or lowering a gate-like disc within the valve body. This design minimizes resistance when fully open, creating a straight, unimpeded flow path. Because of this, gate valves are best used for on/off applications rather than for regulating flow.

The valve is operated by a multi-turn stem, which requires several rotations to fully open or close. Turning the handwheel causes the gate to move up or down via a threaded mechanism.
