What is pneumatic linear actuator？

Pneumatic linear actuators are electromechanical devices that use compressed gas (such as dry air or inert gas) as a power source, and their core function is to convert gas pressure into controlled linear motion through the coupling of pneumatic energy and mechanical structure.

These actuators follow the principle of fluid dynamics, relying on the dynamic adjustment of the pressure difference in the cylinder to drive the piston or diaphragm to produce axial displacement, thus outputting thrust or tension to realize precise positioning, high-speed reciprocating motion or load handling tasks in industrial scenarios.

 Linear Pneumatic Actuator Working principle

The compressed gas enters the cylinder from one end and pushes the piston towards the other end (simultaneous venting of the exhaust port). By switching the direction of gas entry through the valve, the piston can move back and forth. The speed of the piston is controlled by the speed of the exhaust gas, and the amount of thrust is determined by the gas pressure and piston area.
The “elasticity” of the gas itself makes it able to cushion the impact of overload, but it also leads to a lack of precision in starting and stopping, and requires a sensor to assist in correcting the position.
