Mechanical Seals: Types and Selection

Mechanical seals are the most crucial component for preventing fluid leaks from a pump, and their selection directly impacts the pump's safety and longevity.

Internally Mounted vs. Externally Mounted

Internally mounted seals are installed inside the fluid, are the most common type, and offer good pressure handling but are difficult to repair. Externally mounted seals, on the other hand, are installed outside the fluid, making them easy to install and inspect, though they are typically used for lower pressure and non-hazardous fluids.

Cartridge Seals

A modern advancement, cartridge seals pre-assemble all componentsdynamic ring, static ring, springs, and auxiliary sealsinto a single sleeve. Their greatest advantage is that they can be installed and replaced as a single unit, which significantly simplifies the installation process and minimizes failures caused by installation errors. Cartridge seals are the preferred choice in modern pump design.

Single vs. Double Mechanical Seals

Single Seals

This configuration uses a single pair of friction faces (a dynamic ring and a static ring). While simple and low-cost, their failure allows the process fluid to leak directly into the environment. They are suitable for non-hazardous, non-flammable, and inexpensive media.

Double Seals

Featuring two pairs of friction faces, double seals create a "seal cavity" between them. By introducing a barrier or buffer fluid, they completely prevent hazardous media from leaking into the atmosphere. Even if the inner seal fails, only the barrier fluid will leak, providing a crucial double layer of safety. This design is mandatory for handling highly hazardous, flammable, explosive, toxic, or crystallizing media.

Seal Flush Plans: Extending Seal Life

Flushing is a vital method for extending the life of a mechanical seal by providing lubrication, cooling, and cleaning to the seal faces.

Internal Flush

This common method draws fluid from the high-pressure area of the pump's discharge to flush the seal chamber directly. Its purpose is to cool the seal, dissipate friction heat, and prevent media from crystallizing or carbonizing in the seal cavity. It's best suited for clean, non-polymerizing media.

External Flush
