Spindle

The spindle is an important part of the safety valve. It is the rod or shaft that connects the disc to the adjusting screw. The spindle is responsible for transferring the force applied by the spring to the disc. This force enables the valve to open and close in a controlled manner. When the spring is compressed or decompressed, the position of the spindle changes, which adjusts the position of the disc. This mechanism ensures smooth and safe operation of the valve.

Disc

The disc is located on top of the safety valve. Under normal conditions, it acts like a lid, preventing liquid from escaping. However, when the pressure within the system exceeds a predetermined level, the force of the spring overcomes the resistance holding the disc in place. This causes the disc to lift or move away from the seat. As a result, it creates an opening that allows the excess pressure to be safely released through the valve.

Nozzle

A nozzle is a channel or opening through which the fluid or gas is discharged once the safety valve is opened. It thus directs the fluid away from the system. The design of the nozzle ensures that the released material is dispersed safely. Thus, there is minimal risk to equipment and personnel around it.

How does a safety valve work?

The working principle of a safety valve is simple but effective: it maintains a balance between the internal pressure of the system and the force applied by a spring or weight mechanism. When the pressure exceeds a predetermined limit, the valve opens, allowing excess fluid to escape and relieving the pressure. When the pressure returns to a safe level, the valve closes again.

When the system pressure exceeds the set value, the safety valve opens, and part of the gas/fluid pipeline in the system enters the atmosphere, and the system pressure does not exceed the allowable value, thus ensuring that the system does not cause accidents due to excessive pressure.

  3. The safety valve is a weight that maintains a certain pressure. When the pressure is high, the weight will rise and the steam will escape.

  4. The rubber diaphragm is a drain plug, not a safety valve. When the safety valve fails to lift or the pressure rises too quickly; the drain plug will self-destruct, allowing the pressure vessel to vent into the atmosphere.

  5. The hardened rubber diaphragms in autoclaves are designed to fail at a certain pressure. The material can vary, but most appear to be hardened neoprene or viton (synthetic neoprene).

  6. Both types of safety devices are common in every modern pressure vessel, from the pressure cooker on your stove to the pressure vessels in nuclear power plants.
